The DaVinci Code - Dan Brown
What's the big deal? Read Eco instead, or
not.
Yes - this book is very entertaining, exciting
even. It's plot-driven with a very interesting world - except that world is
just a veneer of the one created by Umberto Eco in Focault's Pendulum. It left
me feeling disappointed... but only a little.
I've been telling people that this
book is like a plot-driven Eco, by a writer slightly better than the best of
Michael Crichton. No wonder it's popular... and, yes, that makes this a really
fun read. Just don't expect this to be a great book. Again - the book is good,
and fun, and well-done, but not that new and not that fresh and I'd still
recommend it.
So, the next time you
travel, take the paperback with you - just don't expect to be challenged by the
book, especially if you've read more than one Eco book.
